How this works

LinkedIn shows a preview of your post in the feed and hides everything past a certain point behind a "…more" link. Two separate limits decide where that point falls, and whichever one runs out first is the one that cuts you.

The character budget

Roughly 210 characters on desktop, and roughly 140 in the mobile app. That's the total count including spaces and line breaks, not just visible text.

The line cap

There's also a ceiling on how many lines the preview will show, regardless of how short they are. Three short lines can hit the cap while using barely a fifth of the character budget.

Blank lines aren't free

An empty line between paragraphs still spends a line. An airy, well-spaced opener gets cut earlier than its character count suggests — the whitespace that makes it readable is also what's eating the preview.


What this means for writing

  • Write for 140 characters, not 210. Most people scroll in the app, so the mobile limit is the real constraint. If your hook only works on desktop, most of your audience never sees it.
  • Every blank line is a trade. It costs you a line of preview but buys visual separation. Worth it for a three-line hook, expensive if you're spacing out five.
  • Aim to get cut mid-thought. The cut is a feature. A preview that ends on a complete sentence gives people permission to scroll past; one that stops mid-sentence makes them click.
  • The click is measured. Expanding the post and the time spent reading afterward are both engagement signals. A well-placed cut isn't just good writing, it feeds distribution.

A caveat

LinkedIn doesn't publish these thresholds and quietly tests variations on them, so treat the numbers here as a close approximation rather than a guarantee. The first 140 characters are the only stretch that's safe on every device.
